colors by me!

this is my second coloring of this piece, the first was done as a study of nei ruffino's coloring and this second version is using what I've learned from the first one mixed with what I already know. the first version will be uploaded to my scraps.[link]

I bastardized the light-source of the lines quite a bit to refrain from doing the same rendering twice. its noticeable in a few areas but I achieved the look I wanted.

comments and critique welcome :)

First...what a powerful use of light and shadows you portrait in this illustration. From the tone on tone in the wolves hair and the moon reflecting off of the skin and hair of our the ominous staring glow of the wolves eyes. I like the climbing anchored stance you chose, the tattoos you have added to embrace the clan...and the depth and distance created by the den appearing over the ridge. All and all,, for vision, originality, technique and Impact...I would say that the Four of you have created a 5 Star Masterpiece...I believe it is worthy of Epic Poster proportions.

To be honest, I'm not sure what I'm critiquing here because all you did was color it. So I shall critique all of it! Yay!

Now, to the nitty gritty.

I'll start with the girl since she's the center of the picture. This pose is very awkward. And by that, I mean her right leg (to our left) is in a very odd and uncomfortable position. (And to be honest, and a bit biased against it, why would she be running around in a super small top and short-shorts in the mountains? Doesn't make much sense.)

Not to mention the lines that make her up are thick and sketchy when closely looked at. Then there's the light source on her, it highlights her side and shoulders and touches parts of her front. Since it is the moon and apparently can create such highlights while illuminating an entire mountain valley along with a pack of wolves, then shouldn't the shadows be harsher in contrast? It just seems like the lighting was over used but at the same time, not used to it's advantage.

The Moon: It looks like a light bulb. No real definition. It's round and white. That's it with a bit of blending and shading to make it look mysterious and a bit cloudy. Realistically speaking, the moon would not appear that big in any photo unless you pulled a Bruce Almighty. But my guess is that it's symbolic for something, so I'll let it slide. (Werewolves, my guess.)

The wolf under her right arm (to our left), looks a tad deformed. I've had a gander at wolf anatomy (a glance more like) and I can still tell that looks wrong. The way his eye is on top of his brow makes it an impossible feat in actual anatomy since the socket is meant to be bellow the brow while the brow can give the illusion of dipping over the socket. But not this. And look at the shape of the eye. It looks very different from the other ones. Reason being: They look better.

Other than all of that, I like the style of painting you put it through. The mountains, the wolves fur, all very nicely colored. Her skin is also very nice, but a tad too satiny looking for skin. I suggest using a texture or something next time to make it look a little rougher because of her obvious affiliation with the wilderness.

Also, just a random question: Does she use double sided fashion tape to keep her boobs from slipping out of that top? Because with a full flash of side boob, you can't expect any support or protection from that side.

Sounds good then, I've read up on Jim butchers dresden series and Charlene harris's sookie series so I guess I like the genre, though I much prefer the Dresden files to the sookie books.

I would like to see less flesh tone and more cooler colours on her to give that night feeling... I dont think its quite there yet.
